Our Model

Community Health Model

The Bowen Island Community Health Centre is operated and governed according to the Community Health Centre (CHC) model established by the BC Ministry of Health as a key part of the province’s renewed primary care strategy.

CHCs are locally governed organizations providing a specific population with primary health care, including services to support the social determinants of health. Under the model, a CHC:

  1. provides team-based interdisciplinary primary care
  2. integrates diverse health and social services
  3. is community-centered and patient-focused
  4. actively addresses the social determinants of health
  5. demonstrates a commitment to health equity, cultural safety and humility, and social justice.

Role of the Foundation

The Bowen Island Health Centre Foundation has been the driving force for delivering the vision of health care close to home on the island, and represents the Bowen community at large. The Foundation’s board is a group of community residents that works collaboratively with the community and Health Centre staff to identify and respond to new community needs, ensuring the community enjoys the benefits of increased access to quality health care for generations to come.

The Foundation is also responsible for raising community funds to support the Health Centre’s mission and mandate — health programming, health advocacy for Bowen Island, community health education, upgrades to the building and equipment.
