Overview
The Bowen Island Health Centre Foundation (BIHCF) Board is on a mission to improve the accessibility and provision of primary health care services on Bowen Island for residents and visitors.
The Board holds overall accountability for the oversight and stewardship of the Foundation, which is the owner and operator of the Bowen Island Community Health Centre.
We are currently seeking up to 3 new board members ideally with previous governance and/or committee experience and with expertise in the following areas:
- Health care knowledge, with a preference for experience with primary care and/or family practice, interdisciplinary team-based care, or the Community Health Centre (CHC) model
- Finance
- Fundraising and/or partner development

Duties of Directors
All Directors of BIHCF’s governance Board are responsible to:
- Ensure regular review of, understand, and support the Society’s vision, mission, values and goals.
- Ensure regular review of, understand, and comply with the Society’s constitution, bylaws, and policies.
- Attend at least 75% of Board meetings.
- Engage in periodic strategic and business planning.
- Engage in community relations, supporting special events and promoting the organization in the community.
- Ensure appropriate financial management and effective programming.
- Appoint the Executive Director, establish remuneration, evaluate performance, and ensure a succession planning process is in place.
- Provide leadership and direction to the Executive Director.
- Attend and contribute effectively to Board meetings, Annual General Meetings, and any special general meetings.
- Serve on committees of the Board and attend and contribute effectively to committee meeting and activities.
- Engage in informed, candid, and honest dialogue with respect for each other’s differences, valuing the contributions and opinions of all Directors.
- Approve all new BIHCF members, as outlined in the bylaws.
- Promote equity, diversity, and inclusion in keeping with the objectives of the Society.
- Consider an annual individual donation at a level that is personally meaningful.
- Commit to a three-year term of office (unless a shorter term is required or applicable) and approximately 4-6 hours of time per month (estimated based on one board meeting and one to two committee meetings per month).
Skills and/or areas of expertise:
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Excellent communication skills
- Knowledge of, or interest in learning more about, the Bowen Island Health Centre Foundation
- Knowledgeable about or open to learning about board governance and best practices
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Forward looking mentality and focus on continuous improvement
- Knowledge of non-profit governance, with 1 – 3 years previous board or committee experience
Time Commitment
Approximately 4-6 hours on average per month for a 3 year term, with some fluctuation over the course of the year
